Most Holy and Blessed One, God our ancestors, God of the dawning light of resurrection, we praise you in this Easter season, and ask that you uphold us as we join in your care for the world, beginning with these intercessions:
God of Paul and Silas, singing in their cells, we pray for those of us who are in prison, or in jail, or out on parole. We pray for all of us who are caught in the school to prison pipeline, and for all of us who have the power to change that system…God, in your grace, hear our prayer.
God of Mary of Magdala, from whom were cast seven demons, we pray for those of us who have internalized abuse, have internalized skin tone bias, who have internalized “girls don’t do that.” We pray for all of us who wrestle with the demons of addiction, and the demons of regret…God, in your grace, hear our prayer.
God of Moses and Miriam, we pray for those of us who are walking the long desert path toward freedom: freedom from voter suppression, freedom from laws that exclude some of us from businesses and bathrooms in the name of religious freedom, freedom from the tar pits of debt, and freedom from the very real slavery of human trafficking….God in your grace, hear our prayer.
God of Mary and Martha of Bethany, and of Lazarus, we pray for those of us who sense the nearness of death, and for those of us whose loved ones have died – in the streets or in hospice. We pray for all of us who sit at bedsides, waiting in that space in between…God, in your grace, hear our prayer.
We pray for all this, Gracious One, and for all that we have forgotten, knowing that you remember, and that you are already moving in the world. We pray all this trusting in you, because of what you have already done, in Jesus. We trust that Jesus will continue to rise again among your people with healing, with compassion, and with a fierce cry for injustices made right, for it is in his righteous and powerful name that we bring this prayer. Amen, and let all the people say, “Amen.”
This prayer was written for Eden Theological Seminary’s Spring Convocation, March 29, 2016. The theme of the event was “Forward from Ferguson.” Eden Seminary is located 12 miles from Ferguson, MO.
